Museum of Brands

Audience and revenue growth plan. We used our ‘Experience Audit’ tool to advise Museum of Brands on how to optimise revenue generation and audience development. Building on this work, we supported with facilitated strategy sessions and delivery of a marketing action plan for their museum and venue hire business.

Birmingham Museums Trust

Commercial business plan. As part of the “Laying the Foundations” strategic transformation project, we collaborated with Human Economics to support business planning for Birmingham Museums Trust. This project focused on the long-term sustainability of civic museums, with a strong emphasis on public value and community relevance.

Audience development strategy. We composed a full audience development plan, working alongside Morris Hargreeves McIntyre to create an ambitious and pragmatic growth plan supported by robust audience data. Our report included a detailed action plan and both strategic and operational guidance.

Amsterdam Museum

Strategy and museum redevelopment support. We supported Amsterdam Museum with a set of strategic workshops, starting with one designed to help amplify the impact of its ‘new’ museum - the re-opening of the Burgerweeshuis site in the centre of Amsterdam. Considering museum purpose, audience need, creative principals and commercial opportunity, the workshops were supported by detailed recommendations reports.

British Library Leeds

Commercial pricing review. We supported the British Library Leeds Presence team with a full review of commercial pricing for their future site in Leeds, supporting their business case. This included market research and close consultation with internal and external stakeholders. Detailed benchmarking across multiple business lines was provided alongside strategic recommendations.

Nottingham Contemporary

Charging options review. We delivered a detailed options report for Nottingham Contemporary to help them consider ticketing and donations income. Balancing the needs of audiences, expectations of the local market, financial imperative and organisational purpose and values, we supported the team to consider the impact of different choices, set out how to test and learn, and provided detailed financial models to use as they implemented a new ‘Give What You Can’ approach.

Ashridge House

Cultural programme commission. We supported Ashridge House in shaping their 2024 summer cultural programme, ultimately commissioning an urban art exhibition in their stunning gardens. We also supported the Ashridge House team with research, benchmarking, and programming recommendations for their winter events.

British Library

Capital project space and commercial opportunities review. Working on their St Pancras Transformed capital project - an Extension to their London site - we were commissioned to consolidate the requirements for their new Foyer entrance space and to review the commercial opportunities of the wider Extension, assessing current revenue expectations and discovering new revenue where possible.

National Galleries Scotland

Revenue diversification process and options study. We supported National Galleries Scotland with a process called ‘Ideas to Income’. A brief to both establish a process that NGS could use internally to assess and implement new revenue opportunities (seeking diversification of revenue), and a review of current revenue optimisation. Working in a highly collaborative manner with the NGS team, we set about identifying the best routes for new revenue.

Crafts Council

Sector support review. We advised the Crafts Council on their role for the craft sector, focusing on how to make the most effective use of their resources to best serve makers. We explored where they could generate new revenue, how to integrate diversity goals, and identified partners to work with.

Blandford Fashion Museum

Full business plan. We delivered a full business plan for this NHLF funded project. We advised across the full business mix, including capital works and museum operations, collection and research requirements, revenue generation and financial planning, audience development and marketing, education and outreach programming, resource management, and governance. We delivered a robust plan for the future.

Museum of Oxford

Revenue generation review. We provided a review of revenue generation opportunities at the Museum of Oxford, detailing options for optimisation and growth in consideration of their unique role within the Oxford community. We provided financial modelling of options, case studies for inspiration and a practical set of actions to take forward.

British Film Institute

Retail business review. We worked with the BFI on an updated plan for their retail business. Looking across all elements of retail (on-site, online, as a brand ambassador, as part of the guest experience) we worked with the team on ambitious but realistic changes that would create a more sustainable and impactful revenue line.

Crystal Palace Park Trust

Commercial opportunities review. We worked with the Trust to consider commercial opportunities that would reflect the important purpose of the park and its iconic place in history. We created a reference tool that included a rating system for revenue potential, audience value, effort against return, environmental impact, reputational risk, social impact, market size and resilience, purpose alignment and organisational storytelling. Our work informed an updated commercial development action plan.

Ambassadors Theatre Woking

Venue hire support. We worked as an extended part of the team to optimise venue hire and sponsorship for the theatre and cinema venue. Our role involved market research, process and package design, live marketing and sales support, and ongoing strategic advice.

National Football Museum

Audience development plan. We delivered a clear and engaging audience development plan ready to be owned and actioned across the museum's team. Our work included consolidating audience data and insights (identifying who is engaged and who is missing), considering external influencing factors, running cross-team consultation workshops, and creating new audience groups to guide action and decisions.

Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum

Catering and commercial opportunities study. We delivered a comprehensive assessment of commercial opportunities related to the catering operation and the use of different museum spaces. Working closely with the in-house team and its trusted suppliers, we provided cost/benefit options backed-up with robust market research and financial analysis.

Wentworth Woodhouse

Culture strategy. We were selected to compose the Culture Strategy for this important heritage site in Rotherham, Yorkshire. Consolidating learnings from four years of programming and consultation, our role was to create a vision for Wentworth Woodhouse that was clear, inspiring and meaningful to funders, partners and the local community. We also facilitated a Board strategy day a few years after the Culture Strategy was delivered, helping to continue the impact of this piece of work.

Foundling Museum

Venue hire support and audience development plan. We delivered a top-line review of the museum's venue hire business assessing the quick-wins and longer-term shifts required to meet the museum's financial targets. We also delivered a full audience development plan for the museum, setting out strategic and operational actions to grow visitors.

Berwick Barracks

Audience development plan. We wrote the audience development plan for Berwick Barracks, known as the Living Barracks - a new cultural hub and visitor destination in Berwick-upon-Tweed. The Berwick Barracks Partnership worked alongside the Berwick community on this ambitious new cultural project for the area.

Sheffield Museums Trust

Strategic and commercial advice. We provided strategic commercial advice for Sheffield Museums Trust’s Kelham Island and Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet sites. We provided an objective view on commercial opportunities, audience engagement and the guest experience offered at each site, and offered strategic advice relevant to the wider SMT group.

Southbank Sinfonia at St John's Smith Square

10 year business plan. We delivered a 10 year business plan for Southbank Sinfonia at St John’s Smith Square. The plan was designed to be a compelling and realistic roadmap for the orchestra and venue as a newly combined organisation, ready to be used for funding applications, internal management, partnership approaches and wider advocacy.

Bishopsgate Institute

Venue hire income strategy. We worked with Bishopsgate Institute to develop a comprehensive five-year income generation strategy, offering an objective external view of the potential around venue hire. We then took on delivery of aspects of the strategy, including a marketing plan, support with recruitment, and taking on interim roles to support the events team at a critical time.

Anglia Ruskin University

Events review. We undertook a strategic review of Anglia Ruskin University’s events, applying our expertise in events strategy and operational delivery to identify areas for improvement, growth or change. We developed a suite of recommended solutions to address the identified key challenges and drive positive change, as well as developing a business case for additional resource to support long-term success and sustainability.

Greater London Authority

Advocacy review. We worked with the London Borough of Culture Team to strategically assess where and how to apply advocacy efforts to protect and grow the London Borough of Culture programme. This work involved extensive consultation with LBOC’s network and advisors, as well as supporting the team with setting out priorities and ambitions using Culture Sprint workshops.

National Museum of the Royal Navy

Venue hire business plan. We delivered a detailed review of NMRN’s venue hire and filming business lines, covering five sites across the UK. This work included market research, financial and audience analysis, supplier and partner assessment, operational and resource planning, and full marketing and sales guidance. In addition, we managed their supplier tender for Hartlepool.

English National Ballet

Venue hire support. We took on the commercial hires business line at ENB as part of an interim resource solution, in the form of a sales administrator, operational manager and strategic lead. We delivered a full market assessment and marketing plan, oversaw new operational processes, took on the inbox and client relationship mangament, and led on inclusive and responsible recruitment for the permanent team.

Secret Cinema

Community programming. We worked with Secret Cinema on their community outreach programme, which involved interpreting show content to create experiences for local young people and school children. We managed the full process from setting budgets, managing schedules and creative programming workshops, to coordinating marketing and outreach to the intended community groups, schools and individuals.

Brighton & Hove Museums

Ticketing review. We delivered a detailed review of BHM's ticketing structure & membership offer to inform their pricing changes across the museums' five sites. Our work included creating a clear pricing structure, a tiered structure for discounts, messaging to encourage visitor engagement, maximising the potential to generate gift aid income and retaining the added value/reduced price offer for local residents. We later supported BHM with their senior management and Board strategy days.

Commercial planning support. We worked with the team on their commercial strategy by exploring opportunities around venue hire, filming, exhibition catering, marketing and corporate membership. We provided new research, practical advice and creative revenue solutions, as well as setting up interim sales resource.

Cultivator Cornwall

Sector consultation. We worked on a consultation project with professionals across the creative industries in Cornwall as part of Cultivator Cornwall's 'Baseline' survey. We facilitated conversations that explored in more depth individual’s experiences during the pandemic, and used creative workshops alongside 121 meetings to gather invaluable feedback into the final consultation response.

V&A Dundee

Venue hire and digital events review. We delivered a review of the Museum’s commercial events business. The project involved analysing the current and prospect market for events and related business lines, sales and marketing planning, and a review of feasibility against internal resources and organisational priorities. We also performed a feasibility study for digital events for the Museum.

Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery

Venue hire strategy. We led a venue hire consultancy project to help Pitzhanger recover during and post-pandemic, including a detailed feasibility study for the events and filming business, recruitment of their permanent team, and delivering a full supplier tender. We also were invited to take on customer relationship management as an interim resource solution while recruitment was underway.

Tara Theatre

Commercial opportunities review. We worked with Tara Arts to review their commercial revenue opportunities ahead of their reopening after the pandemic. We worked on an assessment of all areas of potential revenue generation, including venue hire, filming, catering, public events, and corporate fundraising packages, as well as identifying marketing, sales and partnership opportunities.

Tunbridge Wells Council

Venue hire review. As an approved supplier for Tunbridge Wells Borough Council's Cultural Advice Panel, we delivered an intensive review of the hire potential for a new venue in the area, alongside considering integrations with corporate membership packages, working closely with other consultants to provide thorough and comprehensive guidance for the Council.

Southwark Council

Cultural Compact feasibility study. We advised on the implementation of ACE’s Cultural Compact initiative that aimed to connect arts, business and public bodies to find new support for culture. We listened to local people and organisations to define how best to deliver the initiative in Southwark, and used the findings to support the Council's pandemic-response for the sector.

Venue hire support. We implemented a new sales and marketing plan to re-launch their events business after a devastating fire. We assessed BAC’s place in the market, reviewed their current and prospect pipeline,  and explored new revenue opportunities.

Aspect

Online event delivery. We managed the operational delivery of Aspect Festival21, an online two-day event. Alongside a dynamic programme of academic talks and creative performances, we delivered a radio broadcast as part of the festival and live streamed the event to audiences via Youtube.
